TECHMAN

A commission for my brother, for a friend of his, who, as the picture indicates, is a stage tech superhero, righting the wrongs of bad theatre lighting across Canada. haha. I think a play that had a punk, a princess and a rabbit in it would be a cool play.

Coffee Creamer

I accidentally clicked the "post" link while browsing my friends' journals so I thought... what the heck.  I'll post something.

Today I did the laundry with my Mom.  It's very hot in Alhambra these days, but it's always fun to spend time with her.  Earlier during lunch, my brother and I were telling Kazu about how we used to eat cereal with water, orange juice, and coffee creamer mixed with water.  We thought it was normal because my brother was allergic to milk when he was little (along with eggs and peanuts).

We had a good laugh about that.  Then my Mom set down her glass of water with a nostalgic smile.

"Whenever I hear about coffee creamer I always think about when I was little..."

She then told us about the time when American soldiers were handing out 5lb bags of coffee-mate creamer in post-war South Korea (the era she grew up in).  As her and her friend walked home with their bag, they would put handfuls in their mouths and poof it out so clouds of it would fall on their faces, making them look like ghosts.  Their neighbor, a lady who couldn't speak, would just watch them do this and laugh, laugh, laugh.

Apparently, the locals didn't know what the powdery stuff was used for, especially since they didn't really drink any dairy.

So she told me that her neighbors would mix the creamer with sugar and steam it in a rice cooker, making a hard milky-tasting candy that the neighbors would then distribute to the kids.

She also told us a story about how there used to be two chimneys that heated the floor of her home.  Outside, the chimneys rose up the side of the house, and the space between them was very warm and cozy.  She used to hide stacks of comics there and read them.  One night, she was so engrossed in the comics, she wound up staying there reading far into the night.  Her whole family was out looking for her.  When her mother finally found her, she was so mad she BURNED all of my Mom's comics!  OMG.  I'm glad my Mom never burned any of my comics.

I love my Mom's stories.  She has soooo many of them!  One day I'll write them all down and illustrate them.

As for the current book, I made it past the big road block and it's awesome.  I just tried to block everything out in my life and focus on a sort of free-flow feeling, like what did that character really want to say at that moment.  I had to remind myself that no one will be seeing this until I want them to, so reminding myself of that helped to loosen my inhibitions, and it turned out great with some pleasant surprises.  It's really surprising to me how closely the symbolism ended up reflecting things I went through in childhood via this fantasy story.  Can't wait until I'm done.  I'm on page 100/300 now.

Restless

Must finish work. Possibly one day of overtime this weekend. Nothing big, it was expected, and overall everything is going well.
So...
Drawing something else actually helps )

In other news, I've been reading "The Terror" and enjoying it. Heck, forget television, that book is more fun!

"A lot of people like snow. I find it to be an unecessary freezing of water." - Carl Reiner

Something about myself: I love surprises.

I was having a bad day and The Boyfriend decided to ride six miles on his bike just to see me. Of course, I had no make-up and was just bundled up on the couch, but that's what makes surprises interesting. We enjoyed a great rest of the day. Mmhm. The last time he surprised me, he drove out of his way to buy me roses. I love his surprises, wish they came more often, but I guess that's what makes them a treat.

One of my most memorable surprises wasn't so great. Mum threw me a sweet sixteenth and incited silly, rather lame party games. But hey, it had everyone talking for a long while.

So... updates. I know I said at one point that I would be trying to post more often... and something about new artwork... and ...yeah. I think I've only had, what, three public updates since the end of April, working on it... I promise.

Ability to finish a drawing: GONE.

Some sketches from the past little while... )
Also a few updates to the website, namely on the art & sequential pages. Made a rough storyboard for a promo of my show, it's the first one right here. Movement's ok but very stationary camera angles so it's a little boring in that sense. Ah well. Boarding's still the funnest.

ATTN: Cooks and Bakers

Does anyone out there have good, TESTED (i.e. you have made this recipe you, yourself, and it was successful) sugar-free dessert recipes? I'm looking particularly for things like cookies or bars using Splenda sugar substitute, and it needs to be something relatively quick and easy to bake. I usually search Recipezaar, but they're a bit lacking in reviews and Splenda is too expensive to waste.

I have some get-togethers coming up over the next few weeks, and several diabetic family members which I'd really like to provide worry-free treats for. Any help, advice, or recipes are appreciated.

Filling in forms, doodles...

Had to do a whole lot of paperwork tonight, filling in form for work permits, TN visas, blahdeblahdeblah. Each seemed to repeat themselves! How often do I have to repeat my &?%?#@ address? They more than love paperwork, they collect them.
Though I must admit, the last questionnaire was very much fun, with questions along the line of "are you planning to overthrow the government of the United States" or "are you affiliated to the Communist Party" (well, there was the Marxist Leninist party in Canada, though I never voted for them).
Did I draw tonight? No! I was doing paperwork!! Gah!

Good thing I doodled things at work.
any doodle is a good warm up exercise )

WRRAAAAGH.

gahhh!! >:

don't you just hate when you -finally- get the money to get the doll you want and it's not available? T__T So so so, I decided to go for the dreadful towering hound to join my party, but of course dollshe is taking a break. I do hope he comes back soon with all the new ones up for sale, I can't stand to the wait. I've been watching the DOA marketplace and it seems the hound is just so full of awesome that no one is really willing to settle on selling him. Either that or they are waiting to see what dollshe will do. I hope one pops up soon or I might just go for a Shiwoo. (ho snap I love all the woo's.)

ahh well. I'm not good at this waiting thing. never was. : /

and omg!! I went to the doll meet last weekend(yayyy) and I bought the most absolute cutest dress EVER for lily from build a bear. It was the BEST $6 I have ever spent, that I can remember of course. It fits her quite lovely, usually I have to take the velcro in to make things from F2Bmade fit, but not this time. ^,^

My only complaint it that the material used fells cheap and it's stiff. But I love the dress so much on her.

The Dagon Files

What better way to celebrate the 141st anniversary of the Confederation of Canada than with some horrible fishy froggy demon creatures? Let's visit the lovely New England seaside town of Innsmouth.

Sorry for the large file; I rather liked the way it scanned so I didn't greyscale or adjust levels which usually brings down the file size.
